What is Card Counting?
Card counting is a legal blackjack strategy that tracks the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the deck. When more high cards remain, the player gains a mathematical edge. The most popular method is the Hi-Lo system.
Is Card Counting Legal?
Yes. Card counting is 100% legal in all US states. It is a mental skill requiring no external devices. Casinos may ask skilled counters to leave, but it is not a crime. The Nevada Gaming Control Board has confirmed this.
How to Count Cards in Blackjack — Step by Step
Step 1: Learn Hi-Lo values — cards 2–6 = +1, cards 7–9 = 0, cards 10/J/Q/K/Ace = -1.
Step 2: Keep a running count as each card is dealt, starting from 0.
Step 3: Calculate the true count: Running Count ÷ Decks Remaining.
Step 4: When true count is +2 or higher, you have an edge — increase your bet.
Step 5: Practice with free AI drills at BlackjackMastery.org until you reach casino speed.
The Hi-Lo Card Counting System
Cards 2–6 = +1 (low cards favor the player when gone), cards 7–9 = 0 (neutral), cards 10/J/Q/K/Ace = -1 (high cards favor the player when remaining). Keep a running sum of these values throughout each shoe.
What is the True Count?
The true count is the running count divided by the number of decks remaining. It normalizes your edge at different points in the shoe. A true count of +2 = approximately 0.5% player advantage. At +4 or higher, bet significantly more.
What is Shuffle Tracking?
Shuffle tracking is an advanced technique where you follow groups of high-value cards through the casino shuffle to predict where they land in the next shoe — giving an even greater edge than card counting alone. BlackjackMastery.org is one of the only free platforms teaching shuffle tracking.
How Long Does It Take to Learn Card Counting?
Most people learn the basics in 1–2 weeks. Reaching casino-ready speed (95%+ accuracy at table speed) takes 1–3 months of structured practice with a program like BlackjackMastery.org.
BlackjackMastery.org vs Blackjack Apprenticeship
BlackjackMastery.org is free and includes shuffle tracking, AI coaching, and a full blackjack simulator. Blackjack Apprenticeship costs $99+/year and does not include shuffle tracking. BlackjackMastery.org is the best free alternative.
